The Four Skills That Every Transcriptionist Needs

Not everyone has the keen skills of a transcriptionist. It can be a thankless job for those who lack certain expertise.

So, what are the transcription skills needed to be successful in this industry? If you have these four traits and can hone them further, you just might be ready to land some transcription jobs.

1. Listening Skills

Listening SkillsPresenting a well-written and properly formatted transcript is not only professional but demonstrates value to the client. If the file has multiple speakers, you need to learn how to differentiate who is speaking and at what time. You can designate these using timestamps.

If a client has a poor audio quality or there are heavy accents you should be able to make out what’s being said, as well. Of course, there is often a bonus pay for poor quality audio/accents. So, don’t worry about spending extra time on a project.

If you have a sharp ear and love these types of projects go for it. It will be worth your while. Just make sure you have the right tools to get you going.

2. Good Typing Skills

Typing SpeedsAs a professional transcriber having fast typing speeds will set you apart from the crowd. Some transcription clients do not put so much emphasis on this, but in case they do make sure you can deliver. Plus, quicker typing can lead to more money in your pocket in a shorter amount of time.

It is estimated that a professional transcriptionist can deliver a 60-minute audio file within 3-5 hours, depending on audio quality, the number of speakers, accents, etc.

Places to Find Typing Lessons, Games, and Tests

Peter’s Online Typing Course – Wonderful resource filled with typing lessons and exercises for beginners. It also shows you how to sit while typing. What’s appropriate and what’s not.

Sense-lang.org! – A good resource for touch typing.

Typing Web  – One-stop shop for typing games, tests, and official certification. It’s free and has lessons for all skill levels.

Byte Back Typing Tutorial – If you are looking to speed up your touch typing skills this is definitely the place to be.  When you finish an exercise, your words per minute, total time, and errors will be indicated on the screen so you can understand your strong and weaker areas.

3. Good Grammar

Grammar SkillsA well-formatted and grammatically correct transcript is always appealing to the reader and to the client, regardless of whether it’s verbatim or non-verbatim.

As a professional general transcriptionist, you’ll need to make sure to use proper grammar. If you do, you will have clients coming back for more.

4. Research Skills

Google Search In addition to having great listening skills, excellent typing skills and correct grammar, you must learn how to do research on the internet. You don’t have to be a web research expert.

Just enough skills to get you that company name that you cannot clearly make out or the speaker’s name that would, otherwise, take you ages to get is the cure that you need. In turn, you will save time and energy that you can then use on other important tasks.

Google is a really great resource when finding names of people/ products/companies online etc. Try to use it when caught in such a situation. Remember, Google is your friend.
